Do I need a paid AI subscription?
Not to get started. Free tiers are enough to learn the methods, but running a Project Brain every day usually needs higher usage limits and room for larger documents. Check each provider's current plans before paying.
You don't need to pay anything to start. Most AI providers offer a free tier, and that's enough to try the core ideas: writing better prompts, giving the AI project context, and reviewing its output as an editor.
When a free tier starts to pinch
As you use AI for real project work, you may run into:
- Usage limits that stop you partway through a busy day
- Limits on uploaded files or how much text a conversation can hold
- Missing workspace features for keeping documents and instructions together, which the Project Brain relies on
- Data terms that differ from those on business accounts
What each tier includes changes often, so compare the provider's current plans page instead of relying on older articles, including ours.
How to decide
- Use the free tier for two weeks on real tasks such as a status report or meeting summary.
- Note where you hit friction. Was it limits, file size, or missing features?
- Estimate the time saved. If a plan saves you a few hours a week, it usually pays for itself, but that's your call.
- Ask your employer first. Your organisation may already provide an approved tool, which is also the safest choice for work data.
Paid chat plans and API usage are different
A chat subscription covers using the assistant in its app or website. Scripts and automations, like those in Chapter 12 of the book, usually call the provider's API, which is billed separately based on usage. See How much do AI API calls cost?.
