What is Claude Code, and do I need it?

Claude Code is an AI assistant from Anthropic that works directly with files and code on your computer. You don't need it for Chapters 1–8 of the book; it comes in with the local environment in Chapter 11.

Claude Code is Anthropic's tool for working with Claude directly on your computer. Instead of pasting text into a chat window, you point it at a folder and it can read files, write new ones, and create or run scripts while you review what it does.

Do you need it?

Not to start. Chapters 1–8 of the book need no coding and work in a regular chat interface. Claude Code becomes useful when you want to go further:

  • Chapter 11, Local AI Environment, sets up VS Code and Claude Code as your local command center.
  • Chapter 12, Automation and Integration, uses it to build Python scripts and connect MCP servers.
  • Chapter 13, Building Your Command Center, uses it to build a Next.js dashboard.

If you're happy with chat-based planning and reporting, you can skip it entirely.

Why a PM might want it

  • Your Project Brain as a folder. Your documents live as ordinary files on your machine, and the assistant reads them directly.
  • Disposable software. Ask for a small script to merge spreadsheets or reformat a report, use it, and throw it away.
  • Less copying and pasting. Output is written straight to files you can open, edit, and share.

Before you install it

  • Check Anthropic's current documentation for installation steps, supported systems, and what account or billing it requires. These details change.
  • Check your organisation's policy on installing AI tools and letting them access work files.
  • Review what it proposes before approving changes, just as you would review any AI draft.
