What happens to stories when I delete an epic?

Your stories are kept. Deleting an epic removes only the epic itself and unlinks its stories, which stay in the backlog with their status, sprint, points, and other details unchanged.

When you delete an epic, LocalPM removes the epic and unlinks every story that belonged to it. The stories themselves aren't deleted.

What changes

  • The epic disappears from the Epics page, along with its description, color, and progress tracking.
  • Each linked story's Epic field is cleared, so it shows as No Epic.
  • The epic's colored badge no longer appears on those stories in the Backlog list.

What stays the same

Everything else about the stories is untouched: title, description, acceptance criteria, type, status, priority, story points, assignee, labels, and sprint. Stories stay in their current sprint and on the Kanban board exactly where they were, and your reports are unaffected.

How to delete an epic

  1. Open your project and select Epics in the sidebar.
  2. Select Delete on the epic's card.
  3. Confirm the prompt, which reads "Delete this epic? Stories will be unlinked."

There's no undo. If you delete an epic by mistake, create a new one with New Epic and link the stories to it again from each story's Epic field.

Before you delete

If you might want the grouping later, consider these alternatives:

  • Mark it done: select Edit on the epic and set its Status to Done. It keeps its history and stats.
  • Note the linked stories: while the epic still exists, you can see which stories carry its badge in the Backlog. Make a note of them if you plan to regroup them under a new epic.

Compared with deleting a sprint

Deleting a sprint works differently: its stories are moved back to the backlog. See What happens when I delete a sprint?
