How do I start and complete a sprint?

On the Sprints page, click Start Sprint on a sprint in Planning to make it active. When the sprint ends, click Complete Sprint on the active sprint's card.

Every sprint in LocalPM moves through three statuses: Planning, Active, and Completed. You control each move on the Sprints page.

Start a sprint

  1. Open your project and choose Sprints in the sidebar.
  2. Find a sprint marked Planning.
  3. Click Start Sprint.

The sprint becomes Active, and the Board now shows only that sprint's stories, with the sprint's name at the top. A story needs a status of To Do, In Progress, In Review, or Done to appear in a column, so a sprint story still set to Backlog won't show on the board.

If another sprint is already active in the same project, starting a new one automatically completes the old one. See Why can only one sprint be active at a time?.

Complete a sprint

  1. On the Sprints page, find the sprint marked Active.
  2. Click Complete Sprint.

The sprint moves to Completed and is added to the Velocity chart in Reports, which compares the points you committed with the points you finished.

There's no confirmation step when you start or complete a sprint, and a completed sprint can't be reopened, so check the timing before you click.

What happens to unfinished stories

Completing a sprint doesn't move anything automatically. Unfinished stories stay linked to the completed sprint and count as committed but not completed in your velocity. To carry them forward, open each one from the Backlog, change its Sprint field to your next sprint (or to No Sprint), and click Update.

After the sprint

This is a good moment to run a retrospective while the sprint is fresh. See How do I run a sprint retrospective in LocalPM?. If you're deciding whether to end a sprint ahead of schedule, When to close a sprint early and how to handle the fallout walks through the trade-offs.
