How is PDU credit calculated for each course?
PDU credit is your recorded learning time (video playing on the course page plus knowledge check time), rounded down to the nearest 0.25 PDU and capped at the course's listed maximum.
PMI counts 1 PDU per hour of learning activity. Each course credits you for the time you actually spend learning, not a fixed amount.
What counts as learning time
The course page records:
- Video time: wall-clock time while the video is playing on the course page
- Knowledge check time: time spent taking the knowledge check, capped at 15 minutes per attempt
Pausing doesn't add time. Playing at a faster speed means less recorded time, because it's wall-clock time rather than video length.
How the credit is worked out
Your recorded time is rounded down to the nearest 0.25 PDU (15 minutes), then capped at the course's listed maximum. For example:
- 14 minutes → 0 PDU
- 15 minutes → 0.25 PDU
- 34 minutes → 0.5 PDU
- 61 minutes → 1.0 PDU
The listed value is a maximum
A course listed as "3.0 PDUs" can credit up to 3.0, but that isn't a guaranteed amount. The videos run about 17 to 29 minutes, so most learners record less than the maximum. For example, Earned Value Management (EVM) Explained is listed at 3.0 PDUs, but one viewing at normal speed plus the knowledge check typically records well under an hour.
What to report
Your certificate shows your recorded learning time (h:mm), the PDUs you earned in 0.25 steps, and the course maximum. Report the PDUs shown on your certificate, not the listed maximum. See How do I report these PDUs to PMI?
Credit is separate from completion
Recorded time decides your credit. Unlocking the knowledge check is a different rule: it needs at least 90% of the video watched, with each second counted once. Skipped sections don't count toward that 90%, and rewatching a section doesn't count it twice. Read How does the knowledge check work? for details.
